Nelspruit – Some of the concrete beams for the bridge under construction as a fly-over to the existing N4 Toll Route (through the Nelspruit CBD) collapsed last night (30 September 2009) and caused the temporary closure of this section of the N4 Toll Route. This section of road was partially opened by 01:00 this morning.
The P166/1 is currently under construction as an access road towards the new Mbombela Stadium will intersect the Nelspruit Ring Road (Northern bypass) on completion.
The P166/1 is not part of the Nelspruit Ring Road, and is not being developed or constructed by Trans African Concessions (TRAC N4). TRAC is responsible for the operation, upgrading and maintenance of the N4 Toll Route on behalf of SA National Roads Agency.
The collapse of the beams of the P166/1 bridge over the N4 impacted on the company in so far as it has to ensure the safe and proper use of the road infrastructure and ensuring a safe travelling environment to road users on the N4.
Following the collapse of the beams, TRAC’s engineers and emergency teams offered their assistance in the clean-up.
Initial investigations indicate minor damage to the road surface. The company is awaiting more comprehensive engineering reports.
Trans African Concessions is relieved that no loss of life, injury to people or damage to vehicles were suffered. Any incident of this kind is extremely regrettable. TRAC can in no way be held liable for the failure of the beams to the P166/1 bridge.
