Route Update - September 2012
The N4 toll route falls in a summer rainfall region. Road users are reminded to take extra care during wet weather conditions. Heavy mist may be experienced along the route during early morning hours or at night. Switch head lights on, increase following distance and lower traveling speed when visibility is poor.
UPGRADING, REHABILITATION AND MAINTENANCE WORK
SOLOMON MAHLANGU INTERCHANGE (Hans Strydom) TO EKANDUSTRIA (near Bronkhorstpruit)
- Re-surfacing with a thin asphalt layer and sealing along this section of the route
- Single lane closures will apply where road works are undertaken
- Expect delays
MIDDELBURG PLAZA TO VAN DYKSDRIFT INTERCHANGE
- Road marking (line painting) in this section
- Lane closures where maintenance work is underway
VAN DYKSDRIFT TO HENDRIA (N11) INTERCHANGE – MAJOR CONSTRUCTION
- A new divided highway is being constructed which will consist of two eastbound lanes and three westbound lanes upon completion (approximately March 2014)
- Current construction work may cause some delays
- Temporary road closures (10 - 15 minutes at a time) for blasting along the construction area
WONDERFONTEIN TO MONTROSE
- Routine maintenance
- No impact on traffic flow
NGODWANA TO MONTROSE
- Road marking (line painting) in this section
- Lane closures where maintenance work is underway
SCHOEMANSKLOOF – LYDENBURG INTERCHANGE TO MONTROSE
- Re-surfacing with a thin asphalt layer along this section
WORK EXPECTED TO START MID-SEPTEMBER
- Expect lane closures and/or STOP/GO traffic control
- Traffic delays may occur
SUDWALA INTERCHANGE TO BURNSIDE (NELSPRUIT RING ROAD SPLIT) - MAJOR CONSTRUCTION
- This section being widened to a dual carriageway
- Temporary road closures (10 - 15 minutes at a time) for blasting along the construction area
- Be alert and aware of slow moving/ turning construction vehicles
NELSPRUIT TO KOMATIPOORT BORDER POST
- Routine maintenance
- No impact on traffic flow
MOZAMBIQUE – MOAMBA TO MAPUTO MALHAMSWENE JUNCTION / OUTSKIRTS OF MATOLA MUNICIPALITY
- Recent rains have caused some potholes along sections of the road – these are currently being fixed
- The rain and erratic power supply have damaged some light fittings and traffic lights – repairs are underway
- Heavy vehicles, especially overloaded trucks carrying sand and stone, are causing severe damage to road markings and reflective road studs between Moamba and the outskirts of Matola
- Damaged road studs have now been replaced
- Road marking (line painting) will be undertaken in the near future
