Causes of Accidents

Top causes of accidents on the N4 toll road
- Negligent driving
- Burst tyres
- Speeding
- Losing control of vehicles
- Falling asleep/losing concentration
Non roadworthy vehicles – vehicles in poor mechanical order, those with worn brakes and tyres, and deflated or incorrectly inflated tyres – are high risk and cause accidents.
During tyre checks on the N4, a high percentage of vehicles have worn tyres, deflated or incorrectly inflated tyres.
Last year (2010), TRACassist helped 1300 road users who were stranded on the N4 in South Africa and Mozambique. The main reasons they needed help was mechanical failure, flat tyres and running out of fuel. During the first 6 months of 2011 more than 400 road users already required assistance.
